Discover The Charleston DifferenceHistoric Charleston evolved over time into a city of many separate neighborhoods. The first area was a walled City area founded circa 1690. The population then was estimated to be 1200 and that made Charleston the fifth largest city in North America. That area was in the center of what we now know as South of Broad . The next neighborhood on the drawing boards was Ansonborough (circa 1745). Our population had grown to 6800 (1742) Then Harlston Village (circa 1770) and our population was now approximately 12,000 (1775). Then followed Radcliffborough (circa 1786) and by 1820 our population was at 23,300. The French Quarter came along between Ansonborough and Harleston Village and Cannonborough was after 1790. By 1860 we had reached a population of 40,500. Each of these neighborhoods has it's unique flavor.
